What We Give

Weekly Update  #222 4/21/2024 to 4/27/2024

Did you make it out to any of the several events here in Seymour yesterday? First, let me share some of my recent week serving as mayor of the best small town in America.

Did you notice Water Pollution Control out this week trimming access roads for lift stations? Along with training and facility maintenance, this week they spent some time making sure they had access to lift stations trimmed back and ready to roll. They also planted a tree to replace one they damaged during a recent repair. Another of the regular tasks was cleaning catch basins ahead of possible rain coming in. Keep up the good work, WPC. Much of what you do goes unnoticed, but I see you making a difference in our community.

This past week we saw the dedication of Shields Big Diamond as the Steve Coombs Field of Dreams. This is a great tribute to a man who spent the better part of three decades coaching and encouraging our area kids via sports. The event was wrapped up with a first pitch of the youth league game right down the middle from Steve’s sister Brenda. Good work to everyone on making this request a reality.

While on the topic of parks, crews spent several days working on projects around the parks. Plumbing work at Shields and Westside are preparing us for some fun new features as summer rolls around. Finishing up flooring at Gaiser and Westside to get the new playgrounds open in the coming week. Seymour Youth League started the season this past week, which I know from past experience can be one stressful night as you see if your practice has covered what you were worried about in that first game. Good luck to all this season. Thanks to everyone working on projects at the parks.

Did you make it to the Seymour Museum Center Parking Lot Pickers event at the Farmers Market? The group put together another good event giving community members a chance to find treasures from many different sources in one location. Maybe you had a chance to visit the car show hosted by Arby’s behind the Knights of Columbus. If cars weren’t your thing, maybe you had a chance to attend Crossroads Acoustic Fest happening on Friday and Saturday night with live music at three different venues. It also included a songwriters session and guitar show as part of the festival. Mix in a Downtown Shop Around with Seymour Mainstreet and you had a full day of activities to choose from. What all these events have in common are the volunteers working to make them happen. No, they are not all organized by the same group, but they all took a group to make them happen. From early planning to day of volunteers, it takes someone or many someones to make it happen. Be it a fundraiser or because they wanted to see something they enjoy right here at home, they took the time to do something constructive with their time and rolled up their sleeves to make it happen. For whatever purpose you chose to get involved and bring an activity to our corner of the world, thank you for giving of yourself. Today, I will leave you with a quote from Winston Churchill, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give."
