His Own

Weekly update 7/24/2022 to 7/30/2022 #131

To each, his own is crossing my mind today. No, I don’t mean the 1946 Olivia de Havilland film or the song from Willie Nelson. I am thinking about the phrase. Before I venture down this path though, how about some of a recent week serving as mayor of the best smalltown in America?

Are you ready for the third weekend in August? If not, I hope you enjoy this as your preview. Friday, August 19 downtown Seymour will be hopping with the Tom Gray Memorial Pre-Scoop Cruise-in & Car Show. Parking starts at 3:00 p.m, and the show officially starts at 5:00 p.m. Come out and enjoy the cars and support the FOP Cops and Kids program. The next day you have a few options. Seymour Noon Lions is hosting Pig in the Park where you can grab a pork meal for $7 while enjoying some music. Area organizations will be set up to help educate visitors on their offerings. At about the same time you will have the car show at Redeemer Lutheran Church on North Walnut Street. The evening of the 20th is southern Indiana’s biggest rolling car show as everyone takes to the streets for Scoop the Loop. I hope to see many of you at the various events over the third weekend of August.

Recently, I had a chance to participate in some training with Seymour Police Department and other agencies. Working with Seymour School Corporation, they took over part of Cortland Elementary to work on their active shooter response. Like many of the trainings that SPD and even Seymour Fire Department do, we hope we will never have to use the skills they are improving but prefer to be ready if they are needed. In total 38 officers went through the training over several different days from various departments. During the eight hours I helped, I got to experience how well prepared our area departments are and see how the training officers helped improve that preparedness even more. Good work to everyone involved. We are a safer community because of your dedication.

Good work to the Parks and Recreation department on the End of Summer Escape. They brought together partners from many different areas to provide school supplies, sports supplies, and bike helmets. I know the FOP served over 250 hot dogs and more sno cones than that. Then when it was all said and done, they offered a free admission to the Shields Park Pool for the rest of the day. Good work to everyone involved and thank you for your help.

As I flipped through Van Gogh quotes, I couldn’t help but remember a conversation I had several months ago. I have seen many people on my news feed who have loved the Beyond Van Gogh exhibit in various cities. The expereince allows the viewer to step right into the works in an interactive exhibit. Now with all those I had seen who loved it I was shocked when I found someone who didn’t. As we talked they even went as far to say “to each, his own” talking about the exhibit. Some love Van Gogh and his different periods. Others enjoy Da Vinci and his renaissance-era stylings. Fast forward and you will find those that prefer Warhol with his pop art work from the 1950’s. It doesn’t matter what you prefer because the beauty of the works are in the eye of the beholder, and when mixed with “to each, his own” you are free to enjoy what you like while you leave the other works for those who like them. While I was looking at Vincent Van Gogh quotes though, I thought it was important to use this quote to encourage the readers this week. "Find things beautiful as much as you can, most people find too little beautiful."
