Summer Break

Weekly Update #226 5/19/2024 to 5/25/2024

Old and new, along with near and far, made up my week serving as mayor of the best small town in America. Let me see how much I can fit into the next several paragraphs for your reading enjoyment this Memorial Day Weekend as we remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice  while serving our country.

This week, Seymour Fire Department swore in their newest firefighter. On Monday morning, Brayden Polley joined SFD and started his career in the fire service. I look forward to seeing him grow over the years to come. The amount of training he has ahead of him could be daunting, but I am sure he has a support system around him that will help him as he goes. Congratulations and welcome to the team, Brayden.

Seymour Parks and Recreation dedicated a tree this week to former city attorney Rodney Farrow. The ceremony was a good chance to share our favorite Rodney moments and have a few laughs along the way. Thank you to everyone involved in making this happen for the memory of Rodney. The memories shared around it have already brought smiles to many faces.

This week, I had a chance to perform a wedding, which is something I don’t do near as often as I did a few years ago. Smiles were plentiful from the young couple and their family as they said “I do” to one another. Congratulations to Mr. and Mrs. Jent and best wishes on your future lives together.

The Indiana Global Economic Summit was held last week in Indianapolis, which brought visitors from around the world just an hour north of us for a few days. Mr. Omura, the Governor of the Aichi Prefecture, reached out before his visit to see if I could make time for a meeting with him. Aichi is home to many businesses that operate in our region of Indiana with Aisin being one of them. Our meeting was a good chance to discuss investment across our community, region, and state. We also shared about some of the sights to see both here in our region and in the Prefecture in Japan. Thank you, Governor Omura, for the chance to meet during your busy trip. Hopefully, our communities can continue to grow with our collaborations.

There you have it, another week in the life of a small town mayor. Summer break has officially started and the pool is open. Thank you to Outreach Ministries Seymour for hosting their event on opening day just north of Shields Park. It looked like the crowd was growing as I left the pool, which means you get a chance to serve more community members' needs in more ways than one. Today, I will leave you with a quote from Therese of Lisieux to ponder over the remainder of your Memorial Day Weekend. "The value of life does not depend upon the place we occupy. It depends upon the way we occupy that place."
