Making Memories

Weekly Update #238 8/11/2024 to 8/17/2024

So many memories with so many friends and families from over the years, it is sometimes hard to keep them straight. Before that though, let me share some of my week serving as mayor of the best small town in America.

Oktoberfest is less than seven weeks away, and the Oktoberfest Board is working hard to put the finishing touches on various pieces. Sign ups are underway for many different events like the parade, 5K and baking contest. Vendors are full with a waiting list in case someone drops out, and city departments are double checking their plans from set up to tear down to make sure the streets are cleared on Sunday morning when it is all over. Thank you to the board for all the behind the scenes work they do over the year between one Oktoberfest to the next.

Did you have a chance to participate in any of the Seymour car weekend events? Friday night was the Fraternal Order of Police Pre-Scoopthe Loop Car Show. From classics to customs, everyone had something to admire as they walked around the event. The car show helps the FOP with their annual Shop with a Cop event later in the year. If you didn’t get a chance to attend and would like to help with Shop with a Cop, I am sure they would love to hear from you. Reach out to Seymour Police Department for contact information.

The next stop on our annual car weekend is Scoop the Loop. This really puts the car show into motion with spectators lining the streets and cars making the laps. This event is also about seeing old friends and making new ones. While there are pieces of this event like food truck row that require some planning, many pieces are like it was when I was a kid and you just show up and enjoy. Thank you to everyone who visited downtown this week. I hope you enjoyed yourself.

Did you know Duke Energy is in town conducting Neighborhood Energy Saver audits with customers? They had a kickoff event this week at Cornerstone Church with Lola’s Modern Kitchen serving dinner for those who participated. They have sent eligible customers post cards and will be knocking doors to try to wrap up their work in Seymour over the next week or so. Thank you, Duke, for choosing Seymour as a participating city for the program.

This week, as I listened to our youngest daughter repeat something her mother said in the car last year, I found myself thinking about if this was a memory her older sister would have or not. Later in the week, a friend mentioned something from a bike ride with my middle daughter. Flash back to a question from our oldest daughter and you have an assortment of memories that they each have with us that their sisters may not. To make those memories we have to be around each other, and when we are having a good time, it seems like it is easier to make those memories to look back on. Today, I want to leave you with a quote from Italian Poet Cesare Pavese, "We do not remember days, we remember moments."
