Elude Us
Weekly Update #229 6/9/2024 to 6/15/2024
English writer Evelyn Underhill wrote, “For lack of attention a thousand forms of loveliness elude us every day.” Before I share some thoughts on this quote though, let me tell you about some of my week serving as mayor of the best small town in America.
The Wal-Mart Heart team came back to Seymour to give a community member a day to remember. After a convoy from Brownstown to the store in Seymour, Jack made his way through the store with applause and cheers along his way. He was made an honorary driver and got to meet several celebrities including some professional wrestlers with manager Mortiemer Blankenship III as well as Santa Claus. He received gifts from several drivers and Wal-Mart employees. Congratulations, Jack, I hope your day was as special as your contagious laugh. Thank you to everyone who was involved with making June 15th an amazing day for Jack.
This week, I took a chance to change up my schedule and work at the Shields Park Pool. This was a new work day for me as I usually work in the mornings with various departments. Knowing that I am not a certified lifeguard, I suggested that I work in the concession stand alongside some of our pool staff. When it was all said and done, I feel like I can prepare a pretty good pizza or pretzel with cheese and had a good chance to chat with a few of Seymour High School's incoming juniors. Thank you to the Shields Park Pool staff for letting me slow down the process for an afternoon.
Did you get a chance to visit the Mystic Moon Market in beautiful downtown Seymour on Saturday? If not, you missed out as they had lots of arts and crafts with a few food choices for lunch or dinner. Musical acts filled the stage with a variety of styles as the day went on. I believe I heard this was the fifth year for the event with the first year being a chili cook off and the other four being the market. To everyone who has been involved over the last five years, I say thank you for your hard work and dedication to trying to bring people to downtown Seymour.
Back to the opening quote from Evelynn Underhill, “For lack of attention a thousand forms of loveliness elude us every day.” While we visited the market downtown, I had someone share that they loved the chance to visit downtown and have something to do. As much as I try I don’t catch every chance to get out and enjoy our community. From a newer downtown special event in the Mystic Moon Market to an annual event like the Elks Lodge Flag Day program held every year on June 14th we have events. Summer break days, weather permitting, you have the pool as an option to go enjoy. Special events like the Wal-Mart Heart Day and so much more give us choices of events to participate in and reasons to get out and engage with old friends and make new ones. Don’t let those chances elude you and bring a friend along as you try out some of our options. I know each one isn’t for everyone, but hopefully, you can find some that fit into things you like. Just a few more before I call it a weekend update. Soon, you will be able to go check out the new splash pad at Westside Park. Currently, you can enjoy new playgrounds at several parks if you have kids or grandkids at that age. Ball games or a round of disc golf are other options as well. Maybe it is City Jam hosted by Seymour Mainstreet or the Cars and Guitars event coming up on June 22nd in downtown. Saturday morning Farmers Markets run through the end of September and the options go on and on if you look for them. Join me in paying attention and find the loveliness around us every day.
