Different Lens

Weekly update 8/7 /2022to 8/13/2022 #133

“Thank you, Brian, for looking at Seymour through a different lens.” I said these words recently during a world premiere. Before I go deeper into this thought though, let me share some of my recent week serving as mayor of the best smalltown in America.

I recently had a chance to spend some time in an area neighborhood chatting with residents about a proposed project. After five hours of walking and talking about the project, I have a better view of how the area feels about the project. Now we wait for the responses from those who were not at home to come in.

During a recent meeting with representatives from the Seymour High School Key Club, we were introduced to the Yellow Tulip Project. The Key Club would like to plant a Hope Garden here in Seymour, and they are asking for not only the city's help, but help from many that are interested in “smashing the stigma around mental illness” too. Thank you to the representatives from Key Club for reaching out, and if you feel you can help with a monetary donation to help get hands dirty to plant the bulbs so that every spring yellow tulips of hope bloom again and again, please give my office a call at 812-522-4020 or email mayor@seymourin.org for more information.

Congratulations to Seymour Parks and Recreation for another successful Putting for Parks event. The funds raised will be used to support new playground equipment and purchase Pour In Place flooring to make it more accessible for everyone. This is the second year for this event and just one of the over 70 programs that Seymour Parks and Recreation is offering in 2022. This is well past the department's internal goal of 50 programs by the end of 2023. Not every program is for everyone, but they are doing an excellent job of offering many options to several age groups. They have been working very hard to give us fun reasons to enjoy our community's parks and are always looking for new choices as well. Give City of Seymour Parks and Recreation a follow on Facebook to stay in the loop, and keep an eye out in 2023 for quarterly updates via other methods.

During the world premiere of IN Justice, IN, I said “Thank you, Brian, for looking at Seymour through a different lens.” What I was referring to was his view of Seymour as a great place to film a movie or a tv show. As I write today, I am sitting in a cafe/bookstore in beautiful downtown that could easily be doubled as a set for filming. Maybe it is a downtown street for Friday night cruising that they need to shoot a couple scenes. Who knows, maybe it leads to something much bigger than most can currently dream of that opens doors for major motion pictures having access to a sound stage. Brian Snow with Roamin' Soldier Productions visited City Hall earlier this year and shared his hopes for our small town and how it could be exposed to Hollywood for possible projects. Just a few months before that he went a step farther and filmed a short production right here in our neighborhoods and county roads. This led me to thank Brian during the premiere. Currently, at this time, I know of at least one Seymour native who is studying movie production and hoping to get into the career of his dream. Maybe with projects like Brian’s, he can come home to work part of the time and get to visit his family and friends more often. Today, I will end with a Mark Twain quote that is not just for Brian but for all of us to consider. "Focus more on your desire than on your doubt, and the dream will take care of itself."
